AUSTIN – Governor Greg Abbott last night promoted the strong, conservative priorities for the 89th Legislative Session during his keynote address at the Coryell County Republican Party Lincoln Reagan Dinner in Gatesville.

“I want to commend you all for coming together to keep Texas red,” said Governor Abbott. “The way we will continue to dominate Democrats is to purge this liberalism that’s trying to sneak its way into Texas. One key item for this legislative session that affects every family, including right here in Coryell County, is water. Last session, we invested a billion dollars in water projects and infrastructure. This session, we will make the largest investment in water in the history of our state by tapping into new water supplies and repairing pipes to save billions of gallons of water each year. Texas will be truly peerless in a few months. Together, we will maintain our status as the greatest state in the greatest country in the history of the world.”

Speaking to a crowd of over 200 Republicans and supporters, Governor Abbott highlighted the critical work Texas has done—and continues to do—to secure the southern border, including build a border wall, deploy thousands of Texas National Guard soldiers and Department of Public Safety troopers, and install floating marine barriers in the Rio Grande River to deny illegal entry. The Governor then lauded President Donald Trump’s ongoing homeland and border security efforts and spotlighted the partnership between Texas and the Trump Administration to arrest, jail, and deport illegal immigrants in the state.

Additionally, Governor Abbott blasted local taxing authorities for using taxing loopholes to increase Texans’ property taxes. The Governor pledged to pass lasting property tax reform by eliminating those loopholes and requiring a two-thirds voter approval to raise any property taxes. Governor Abbott also noted that Texas plans to improve public education in Texas and deliver school choice for Texas families.
